ASTM A193 B7 Stud Bolts: Properties, Applications, and Buying Guide

Wrong stud bolts can stop a flange project faster than many people think. At first, the price difference between two suppliers may look small. But later, the nut may not fit, the coating may be too thick, the thread may fail, or the inspector may reject the material report. That is when a “cheap bolt” becomes a very expensive problem.

I am Monica Song from Шанхайская компания Hengrui Industry Co., Ltd.. In our daily fastener export work, ASTM A193 B7 stud bolts are one of the most common products for flange, valve, pipeline, and pressure equipment projects. This guide is written to help buyers understand what to ask, what to check, and how to avoid common purchasing mistakes when buying B7 stud bolts from China.

ASTM A193 B7 stud bolts with ASTM A194 2H heavy hex nuts

ASTM A193 is a material standard for alloy steel and stainless steel bolting used in high temperature or high pressure service. B7 is one grade under ASTM A193, so the full name is ASTM A193 класс B7. In the fastener market, buyers may also call it A193 B7 stud bolt, B7 stud bolt, B7 threaded stud, B7 all thread stud, or ASTM B7 bolt. Most of the time, they mean a quenched and tempered alloy steel stud bolt, usually supplied with two heavy hex nuts.

B7 stud bolts are widely used in flange connections, valves, pipelines, refineries, pressure vessels, and industrial equipment. They are not normal threaded rods. They are controlled bolting parts used where pressure, temperature, strength, and safety matter. A simple way to understand B7 is this: it is not just a threaded bar, but a bolting item controlled by material grade, heat treatment, mechanical properties, thread accuracy, nut matching, marking, and material documents.

This is a common question from buyers, especially new buyers in нефтегазовый, mechanical equipment, and industrial supply. ASTM A193 — это стандарт, and B7 is the grade. If you only write “B7 bolt” in an inquiry, most suppliers can understand the general meaning, but it is still not enough for a clear quotation.

A better inquiry should include the standard, grade, size, thread, length, nut requirement, surface treatment, quantity, packing, and document requirement. For example:

ASTM A193 Grade B7 stud bolts, full thread, with ASTM A194 Grade 2H heavy hex nuts, plain finish, MTR required.

This wording tells the supplier what material grade you need, what nuts should match, what surface finish you want, and whether test documents are required. In fastener purchasing, small missing details can create big trouble. A wrong nut, wrong thread, wrong coating, or missing MTR may delay the whole project.

ASTM A193 B7 is usually made from chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. Common material types include AISI 4140 or AISI 4142. The material is quenched and tempered to reach high strength and better toughness. B7 is popular because it gives a good balance of strength, availability, and cost. It is stronger than common mild steel threaded rods and is suitable for many high pressure and high temperature bolting applications.

Below is a simple reference table for buyers. The actual requirements should always follow the latest ASTM standard and your project specification. For sizes up to 2-1/2 inch, B7 is often listed with minimum tensile strength around 125 ksi and minimum yield strength around 105 ksi. Larger sizes may have different mechanical requirements, so please do not copy one strength number for all sizes.

In our inspection process, we do not only check the outside appearance. We also check material, thread, hardness, marking, nut assembly, surface condition, packing, and document traceability. For pressure projects, documents are part of the product. A stud bolt without proper documents may look fine, but it may still fail project inspection. One more point: B7 is not stainless steel. Plain B7 can rust if it is stored in a wet warehouse or used outdoors without protection.

ASTM A193 B7 stud bolts are widely used in industrial bolting, especially in flange and pressure equipment connections. Common applications include oil and gas pipelines, refineries, petrochemical plants, power plants, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, valves, pumps, compressors, and carbon steel pipe flanges.

In many flange joints, the stud bolt passes through two flange holes, and heavy hex nuts are tightened from both sides. This design gives strong clamping force and makes installation and maintenance easier. For ASME flange systems, the correct stud bolt size and length depend on flange size, pressure class, facing type, and gasket type.

B7 stud bolts used for industrial flange connection

My advice is simple: do not guess the length. If you are not sure, send the flange standard, flange size, pressure class, and gasket type to your supplier. For example, “ASME B16.5, 4 inch, Class 300, RF flange, spiral wound gasket” is much clearer than only saying “4 inch flange bolt.” A stud bolt that is too short may not have enough nut engagement. A stud bolt that is too long may waste cost and create installation problems.

Many buyers ask me whether normal threaded rods can replace B7 stud bolts. My answer is: for light-duty fixing, maybe; for pressure flange service, usually no. A normal threaded rod may be made from mild steel. It may not have controlled chemistry, heat treatment, required tensile strength, hardness control, or material test report. It can be fine for simple brackets, shelves, or non-critical fixing jobs, but it is not a good choice for pressure systems.

A B7 stud bolt is different. It is made to a specific ASTM grade, with controlled mechanical properties and heat treatment. It can also be supplied with heat number traceability and material test reports. The price of normal threaded rod is lower, but the risk is also higher in critical applications. If the bolt is used in a pressure system, do not buy only by price. Buy by standard, grade, matching nut, surface treatment, and documents.

The most common nut used with ASTM A193 B7 stud bolts is ASTM A194 Grade 2H heavy hex nut. This combination is very common in flange bolting: ASTM A193 B7 stud bolt + ASTM A194 2H heavy hex nuts. Usually, one stud bolt is supplied with two nuts because the stud passes through the flange holes, and one nut is tightened on each side.

A normal hex nut is not usually recommended for B7 flange bolting. B7 stud bolts are strong, so the nut must also match the strength and service condition. If the nut is too weak, it may strip before the stud reaches the required preload. Final nut selection should always follow project specifications and engineer approval.

ASTM A194 covers nuts for high pressure or high temperature service. Grade 2H is a common heavy hex nut grade used with ASTM A193 B7 bolting. 2H nuts are popular because they are strong, available, and accepted by many industrial projects. For many buyers, B7 stud bolts with 2H heavy hex nuts are the default combination for carbon steel flange connections.

However, nut matching is not only about grade. Thread fit is also very important, especially after surface treatment. Hot dip galvanized coating is thicker than zinc plating, so the nut thread needs proper allowance. PTFE coating also needs coating thickness control. If the coating is too thick or uneven, the nut can jam during installation.

This is one of the most common problems we see in coated stud bolt orders. The bolt may be correct. The nut may also be correct. But after coating, the assembly may not be smooth. That is why we prefer to check nut assembly after coating, not only before coating. In my view, this is one of the details that separates a serious поставщик крепежа from a simple trader.

Yes, ASTM A193 B7 stud bolts are commonly used in oil and gas projects. They are often used for carbon steel flanges, valves, pipeline connections, pressure vessels, and refinery equipment. But oil and gas is a wide field. Sweet service is different from sour service. Onshore service is different from offshore service. High temperature service is different from low temperature service. Clean storage is different from coastal storage.

So the better question is not only “Can B7 be used for oil and gas?” The better question is: “What is the temperature, pressure, medium, corrosion condition, and project specification?” Sometimes B7 is suitable. Sometimes B7M, L7, B8, B8M, or another grade may be better.

Низкотемпературная эксплуатацияASTM A320 L7 or project specified grade
Stainless steel requirementASTM A193 B8 / B8M
Strong corrosion environmentCoating or stainless grade may be needed
Sour service / H2SMust follow project and engineer specification

For oil and gas buyers, I strongly suggest sending the project specification together with the RFQ. If there is H2S, NACE, offshore use, very low temperature, or special coating requirement, tell the supplier at the beginning. Do not wait until production is finished. Fastener suppliers do not like surprises. Project engineers do not like surprises. Inspectors really do not like surprises.

ASTM A193 B7 stud bolts can be supplied with many surface treatments. Common options include plain finish, black oxide, zinc plated, hot dip galvanized, mechanical galvanized, phosphate, PTFE coating, Geomet, Dacromet, Zn-Ni, nickel plated, and customer specified coating. Surface treatment is not only about color. It affects corrosion resistance, thread fit, nut assembly, torque behavior, packing, and storage.

Thick coating, nut allowance needed

Geomet / DacrometХорошие коррозионные характеристикиProject approval may be needed
Zn-NiBetter corrosion resistance than normal zincБолее высокая стоимость
ФосфатUseful for some oil-coated partsStorage protection required

For indoor storage and short-term use, plain finish may be enough. For outdoor or humid environments, zinc plated, hot dip galvanized, or other coatings may be better. For some flange systems, PTFE coating is popular because it can help reduce friction and improve corrosion protection.

A clear RFQ helps you get a faster and more accurate quotation. If the inquiry is vague, the supplier must guess, and guessing is not a good purchasing method.

A good RFQ can look like this:

ASTM A193 B7 stud bolts, 1”-8UN x 7”, with two ASTM A194 2H heavy hex nuts, plain finish, 2,000 sets, MTR required, packed in cartons and wooden pallets, destination Vancouver.

This inquiry is clear and easy to quote. It also helps the supplier check cost, production time, packing weight, and shipping details. If you have a drawing, send the drawing. If you have a project specification, send the specification. If you only have flange information, send the flange standard, size, pressure class, and gasket type. A responsible supplier should help you check the important details before production.

Quality inspection and export packing for B7 stud bolts

After handling many fastener inquiries, I can say that most B7 purchasing problems do not come from the word “B7” itself. They come from missing details. The first common mistake is using normal nuts with B7 studs. The second mistake is ignoring coating thickness, especially with hot dip galvanized and PTFE coated stud bolts. The third mistake is ordering only by flange size without confirming flange standard, pressure class, facing type, and gasket type.

Another common mistake is skipping documents. For pressure projects, a material test report is not decoration. It is part of the product. Without it, the goods may be rejected even if the size and surface look good. I also see buyers choose only by unit price. I understand price pressure, especially for distributors and project buyers, but for B7 stud bolts, the cheapest offer may not include correct material, proper nuts, required documents, or safe packing.

My practical suggestion is simple: compare the full offer, not only the unit price. Check grade, nut, coating, MTR, packing, delivery time, and supplier experience together. This is the real way to reduce purchasing risk.
